Our History

On October 15, 1962, at approximately 8:00 p.m., Leath Street Missionary Baptist Church was officially organized in the home of Bro. and Sis. Tiger Brown on Darien Street. Those present for this historic occasion included Rev. C. D. Brown, Bessie Brown, Bro. Maurice and Sis. Minnie Kate Davis, Doris Brown, Bro. and Sis. Tiger and Allie Brown, Bro. and Sis. James and Geneva Acy, and Bro. James.

After the church was organized and the business meeting concluded, one important question remained: “Where are we going to have church?” The room grew quiet until Bro. and Sis. James Acy graciously opened their home for worship. They removed nearly everything from their living room except a piano and a couch so the congregation would have a place to gather. Church members contributed furniture from their own homes to furnish the sanctuary, demonstrating a spirit of unity, sacrifice, and unwavering faith.

Within a few months, the congregation received a promise to build a church. Although the initial down payment was lost through an unfortunate circumstance, the members refused to be discouraged. Trusting in God, they continued pressing forward in faith, believing that He would provide.

Through God’s guidance and the faithful leadership of Rev. C. D. Brown, the congregation relocated to its present location in 1966. On the first Sunday in the new building, Rev. David Jones delivered a memorable message entitled, “Leath Street, You’ve Come This Far—Where Are You Going From Here?” The church’s response was clear and steadfast: “We are going on in the name of the Lord.”

Over the years, God has continued to bless Leath Street Missionary Baptist Church with growth and expansion. Numerous additions have been made to the original building. One of Rev. C. D. Brown’s greatest visions was the construction of a Banquet Hall to serve Christian families and community gatherings. By God’s grace, that vision became a reality with the completion of the Banquet Hall in 2000, providing a space for fellowship, celebrations, and ministry.

The Lord has also blessed Leath Street Missionary Baptist Church with many faithful ministers. Under the leadership of our late pastor, Rev. C. D. Brown, God called and developed six ministers from the congregation: Rev. Billy Womack, Rev. Manning, Rev. Paul W. Brown, Rev. Edward Mosley, Rev. Brent Wilson, and Rev. Darien Brown. We remain grateful for Rev. C. D. Brown’s faithful leadership, vision, and commitment to advancing God’s Kingdom.

Today, under the leadership of our pastor, Rev. Paul W. Brown, Sr., God continues to bless and expand the ministry. Additional ministers serving under his leadership include Rev. Myron Turner, Rev. Melvin Rose, Rev. Marcus Booker, Rev. Phillip Williams, Rev. Phillip Brown, and Rev. Christopher Mays.

Through Pastor Brown’s leadership, the church has celebrated many significant milestones, including the purchase of a new church van for transportation, the retirement and ceremonial burning of the church mortgage, renovations to the sanctuary with new carpet and pews, and the refurbishment of the Banquet Hall flooring. He also established a Food Pantry Ministry, which continues to serve families throughout the West Dallas community every fourth Saturday, reflecting the church’s ongoing commitment to meeting both spiritual and physical needs.

For more than 64 years, God has faithfully sustained Leath Street Missionary Baptist Church. From humble beginnings in a living room to becoming a place of worship, fellowship, and community outreach, His hand has guided every step of the journey. As we honor our rich heritage, we remain committed to our mission of sharing the Gospel, serving others, and being a beacon of hope throughout the West Dallas community and beyond.
